Bush yearns for Texas in rare singing performance

Sun Mar 9, 6:31 AM ET

U.S. President George W. Bush donned a cowboy hat and sang an early goodbye to Washington on Saturday night with a performance that lampooned White House journalists and Vice President Dick Cheney among others.

Bush surprised cabinet secretaries, diplomatic officials and journalists at the annual Gridiron dinner by taking the stage and giving the first public singing performance of his eight-year presidency, which ends in January 2009.

[More:]

To the tune of country song "Green Green Grass of Home", Bush sang of longing for his ranch in Crawford, Texas and his dog Barney.

"And there to meet me is my mama and my papa, down the lane I look and here comes Barney, heart of gold and breath like honey; it's good to touch the brown brown grass of home."

Bush, singing only slightly off key, then turned to some of the long-term members of his team including Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"For there's Condi and Dick, my old compadre, talking to me about some oil rich Saudi, but soon I'll touch the brown brown grass of home."

"That old White house is behind me, I am once again carefree, don't have to worry 'bout a crisis in Pyongyang. Down the lane I look, Dick Cheney is strolling with documents he'd been withholding, it's good to touch the brown brown grass of home."

Bush told the audience, which erupted in applause and gave him a standing ovation, that they had witnessed "the first and final performance of George Bush and the Busharoos".

The Gridiron Club holds an annual dinner at which journalists put on songs and skits lampooning Democrats and Republicans alike.

Anyone ever thought is would come to this? In the meantime one good thing came out of this... Bush on Friday and passed an anti-terrorism spy bill that permits lawsuits against phone companies.

But the 213-197 vote was far short of the two-thirds majority needed to override a promised veto by Bush. He has demanded that any telecommunication company that participated in his warrantless domestic spying program secretly begun after the September 11 attacks receive retroactive immunity.

The battle over whether to shield companies has been a key reason why the House and Senate have been unable to agree on a bill to replace a law that expired last month that expanded U.S. authority to track enemy targets without a court order.

It has also prompted Republicans to accuse Democrats of undermining national security, while Democrats have accused Bush and his fellow Republicans of election-year fear mongering.

It's extremely heart-rending, we may make jokes on the worst world leader this planet has ever seen, and the most dreaded life time in history... since WWII and more than a hundred times I've considered to think about what the past five year's historical unconventional in the Middle East would have been if the Iraq invasion had not occurred... although this part of the world - have been building up revenge on westerners for some time for as many decades since the attack in Munich during the Olympic games in 1972 - however a more diplomatic 'world leader' would just have better and would lessen the current disaster by a hundred times. Of course let us not forget that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with September 11 whatsoever... Bush distracted the US troops’ energy from the real murderers for a purpose 'WE' people of the world will only find out many decades later - I might not be on the planet anymore but I hope you will all find out about in your lifetime!!

HOLD ON WE MIGHT GET SOME PEACE SOON!!

"U.S. President George W. Bush has dispatched Cheney to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders over the next two days to try to get rocky peace talks moving, despite recent bloodshed. The vice president, who is on a 10-day trip to the Mideast, arrived in Jerusalem after two days in Saudi Arabia."

:>>

Cheney discussing peace is like a vegan discussing sausage at a slaughterhouse.

HAPPY EASTER!!
