Hitler shown at Madame Tussauds

by Diana @ 2008-07-03 - 12:44:04

We cannot change history but is this exhibition really necessary?

Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities. It was set up by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud. The museum moved to its current location on Marylebone Road in 1884. In 1925 a fire destroyed many of the figures, but the moulds survived, allowing the historical waxworks to be remade.

Hitler wax figure unveiled in Berlin amid criticism

BERLIN (Reuters) - Berlin's new waxwork museum on Thursday unveiled a figure of a glum-looking Adolf Hitler in a mock bunker during the last days of his life, an exhibit that has been criticised as in bad taste.

The row over the figure overshadowed the media preview of the new branch of Madame Tussauds which opens its doors to the public on Saturday.

Critics say it is inappropriate to display the Nazi dictator, who started World War Two and ordered the extermination of Europe's Jews, in a museum alongside celebrities, pop stars, world statesmen and sporting heroes.

"Of course the figure will arouse interest but we hope people will realise he is part of an exhibition with a range of attractions," said Meike Schulze, head of Midway Attractions in Germany which is responsible for Madame Tussauds here.

"It will be a shame if he dominates everything."

Her plea appeared to be falling on deaf ears.

About 200 reporters and cameramen all but ignored U.S. President George W. Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, plus the likes of Beethoven, Albert Einstein, Madonna and Brad Pitt.

Instead, they pushed and jostled to peer into a dark corner where the unmistakable figure of Hitler is seated.

Dressed in a grey suit, Hitler gazes downwards with a despondent stare, his arm outstretched on a large wooden table with map of Europe on the wall of his gloomy bunker.

"We wanted to show him like this, in the last days of his life," said Schulze who defended the decision to put him on show, saying market research had shown there was demand for his inclusion, as long his portrayal was sensitive.

About 25 workers spent about four months on the waxwork, using more than 2,000 pictures and pieces of archive material and also guided by a model of the "Fuehrer" in the London branch of Madame Tussauds where he is standing upright.

It is illegal in Germany to show Nazi symbols and art glorifying Hitler and the exhibit is cordoned off to stop visitors posing with him.

Unobtrusive signs ask visitors to refrain from taking photos or posing with Hitler "out of respect for the millions of people who died during World War Two". Camera surveillance and museum officials will stop inappropriate behaviour, said Schulze.

Institutions such as the foundation for Germany's central Holocaust memorial site have condemned the idea of the exhibit as tasteless, saying it had been included to generate business.

However, the wax figure is the latest in a gradual breaking down of taboos about Hitler in Germany more than 60 after the end of the war and the Holocaust in which some 6 million Jews were killed.

The 2004 film "Downfall" provoked controversy as it portrayed the leader in a human light during the last days of his life and last year a satire about Hitler by Swiss-born Jewish director Dani Levy was released in Germany.

A lot of things will provoke controversy, but who decides what goes exposed and what doesn't, people have to know about this horrible man not to repeat same mistakes but in a Museum as such I think it's wrong, and let's hope no one gets the wrong idea and thinks of glorifying criminals.

Isn't Hitler a NAZI symbol all by itself, already? Who are they kidding now?

My best guess to this prosperous contribution is that they didn't have enough new ideas to get a new crowd into the Museum?

Help me out here I'm so perplexed, I'm getting speechless!!

Hitler Statue Decapitated at Berlin Madame Tussauds (

Update1)

By Simone Meier

July 5 (Bloomberg) -- A man ripped the head off a wax sculpture of Adolf Hitler on the opening day of the Madame Tussauds museum in Berlin, police said.

The 41-year-old man pushed aside a guard and an employee who tried to stop him from attacking the likeness of the Nazi dictator shortly after 10 a.m., Berlin police said in a statement. The man was taken into custody and was due to be released later today, police spokesman Uwe Kozelnik said in a phone interview.

The employee suffered a ``slight'' leg injury in the incident, according to the police statement. The man who lives in Berlin's Kreuzberg neighborhood will face charges related to damaging property and injuring a person. The headless statue was removed from display after the attack.

The new museum, located on Berlin's Unter den Linden, not far from the Brandenburg Gate, opened to the public for the first time today. The statue of the Nazi ruler has sparked criticism with some commentators calling it ``tasteless.''

Madame Tussauds said before the museum opened that it would be leaving a gap in German history if Hitler weren't included in an exhibition showing personalities including actress Marlene Dietrich, Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

``There wasn't a compromise,'' Natalie Ruoss, a spokeswoman for the exhibition told N-TV in an interview before the opening. Madame Tussauds ``wanted to show the entire German history.''

Restrictions

The Hitler statue is placed behind a red cordon and has a sign asking visitors to refrain from taking photographs or posing alongside the figure, out of respect for the millions who died in World War II. According to museum policy, a member of staff is on location to ensure they don't.

Merlin Entertainments Group, Europe's largest operator of visitor attractions, owns Madame Tussauds. Merlin itself is owned by Blackstone Group LP, the world's biggest leveraged buyout firm. Madame Tussauds couldn't be reached for comment.

Apparently the display won't be shown anymore till further notice....

//"The new Madame Tussauds museum in Berlin says it will repair a wax figure of Adolf Hitler that was beheaded on opening day, but the museum is unsure about putting it back on display.

Madame Tussauds had been accused of poor taste and publicity-seeking for deciding to feature Hitler in its eighth museum, situated a stone's throw from where he committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin in April 1945."//
